Celebrating Women’s History Month at Rockingham County
This Women’s History Month, we at Visit Rockingham County are highlighting just a few of the women-owned businesses in the area that make Rockingham County all that it is today.
1. Get a little crazy with PrePOPsterous Popcorn
Owner and Founder Tisha McCoy-Ntiamoah brought her love of gourmet popcorn with her from the Midwest and has been serving the valley for the past decade. Each one of her flavors is truly ridiculous, in the best way possible, of course. There’s Absurdly Cinnamon, bright red and completely coated cinnamon candies, and Absurdly Cheddar Bay, golden cheesy popcorn spiked with Old Bay, to name a few. Drop on in and see the delightful nonsense for yourself at their storefront in Bridgewater, or peruse their flavors online.
2. Find the Best Souvenir Ever at Artisan Galleries Massanutten
Described as “The Mountains’ best-kept secret,” The Artisan Galleries Massanutten features handcrafted candles, face cleansers, jewelry, cards, paintings, and just about anything else you could think of. It was founded by the artist and entrepreneur Lauralea Marlyn, whose passion for empowering local artists is infused in everything she does. The gallery itself is located inside the Historic Hopkins cabin, making for a truly unique shopping experience. You can shop online, but nothing will compare to visiting in person.
3. Find your Flair at HenHouse Shoppe
Located in Elkton, this adorable little shop sells everything someone could need for a wardrobe refresh — think boots, earrings, cozy sweaters, and more. Founder Emily Dennis opened HenHouse Shoppe with a passion for fashion and a mission of serving single mothers in the community. What began as a hobby and online store quickly transitioned into a brick-and-mortar location in the heart of Downtown Elkton. Browse their online stock here to find your next favorite piece.
4. Embrace your Sweet Tooth at Sugar & Bean Cafe
Founded by Heather Brenin, Sugar and Bean got its start in the Bridgewater Farmer’s Market, eventually working its way up to a brick-and-mortar store along Main Street. The building is irresistibly charming, and the same can be said for their pastries. If you haven’t tried one of their brownies yet, you are missing out, but they also offer a rotating selection of cookies, cakes, muffins, cake pops, and other goodies along with a robust selection of breakfast and lunch foods. Check out their menu online to see what delicious treats they have to offer.
5. Relax and Unwind with White Oak Lavender Farm
Julie and Richard Haushalter co-own and operate White Oak Lavender Farm and The Purple WOLF Vineyard. Julie manages the daily operations of the lavender farm and the vineyard and Richard contributes to the management and strategic direction of the family business. Open to the public since 2008, the farm offers several different ways to enjoy lavender and appreciate its healing properties. Visitors can gather stems from seasonal U-pick fields, shop for lavender products like ice cream, essential oils, and body products. Visitors can also enjoy beer and 15 types of wine made from grapes grown on or near the farm in the Purple WOLF tasting room. The farm offers wine tastings, lectures, and there’s even a farm experience for kids where they learn about lavender and meet friendly barnyard animals.
