Cave Hill: Where History Brews Innovation
Few places capture the blend of history and modern innovation in Rockingham County quite like Cave Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast and Cave Hill Farms Brewery. These two businesses, both deeply rooted in the land and legacy of McGaheysville, offer visitors a glimpse into the past while embracing the energy of the present.
At the center of this is the Hopkins family, a cornerstone of the local community for generations, with roots stretching back to the early 1700s. Cave Hill Farm itself was established in 1759, with operations beginning in 1830.
But Cave Hill isn't just about its history; it's about celebrating the land and its legacy in new and exciting ways. In 2019, Walt “Gator” Hopkins founded Cave Hill Farms Brewery, becoming Rockingham County’s first official farm brewery.
“We’re into some really interesting beer types and flavors,” says Gator. “We've got a great brewer, we’ve got a great staff. And it was all because of our loyal customer base.”
But it doesn’t stop there. On the property rests Cave Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast. The historic manor, built in 1830, has been lovingly preserved and now serves as the perfect backdrop for guests seeking a tranquil getaway. As innkeepers, Jordan and Kyle take great pride in sharing their family’s history and the natural beauty of Rockingham County with visitors.
"Being able to welcome people into our business and show them the beauty of the Shenandoah Valley is such a rewarding experience,” Kyle reflects. “It’s amazing to meet guests from all over the world and show them what makes this place so special.”
For those looking to experience the best of what the Shenandoah Valley has to offer, Cave Hill Farm Bed and Breakfast and Cave Hill Farms Brewery are waiting to welcome you with open arms. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely morning on the farm, sampling a craft brew at the brewery, or simply taking in the stunning views of the valley, Cave Hill Farm invites you to make your own memories in this historic corner of Virginia.
“We’re proud to be a part of Rockingham County, especially with our roots going back to 1759,” says Jordan. “It’s a privilege to continue our family’s legacy and share the history of this incredible place with the people who visit.”
