Rockingham County Department of Fire and Rescue is an ever-changing organization with the primary responsibility of protection of life and property from fire and other emergencies within the confines of Rockingham County.
The Department of Fire and Rescue is under the direction of Chief Jeremy Holloway and is a combination system made up of:
- 10 Volunteer Fire Departments
- 7 Volunteer Rescue Squads
- Approx. 530 fire and emergency medical service (EMS) volunteers
- 105 full-time career staff
- 25 part-time staff
Career staff presently provides staffing in nine Fire and Rescue stations Monday through Friday from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. and staffs six stations 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
Special Operations Teams
In addition to the Fire and EMS protection to the community the department provides the following teams:
- Swift Water Rescue Team
- Regional Hazardous Materials Team
- Search and Rescue Team
- Technical Rescue Team
Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Alert System
The City of Harrisonburg-Rockingham County encourages all residents and businesses within the boundaries of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County to provide contact information so that you may be notified in the event of an emergency or life threatening weather event (tornado, flash flood warning, etc).

Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center
The Harrisonburg-Rockingham Emergency Communications Center (HRECC) provides 24-hour emergency communications services to the City of Harrisonburg, Rockingham County and the Towns within the County. The HRECC works collectively with all public safety agencies to ensure the safety of our citizens, public safety providers and those persons visiting our area.
